Personally as someone who was never in competitive anything I see the benefit of competitive sports / dance etc for character development. The diligence and application it takes to take it seriously and to strive to do better each time is what I find admirable. That said, my kids are not in competitive sports but if they wanted to pursue something with seriousness I’m all ears!

Yes!! My kids play team sports with the neighborhood kids. They pick the games, they stop when they want to, they disagree and call out cheaters and it’s all in fun. My husband and I are not run ragged, or out late, or missing church.

From a parent who has an older group of public school kids and a younger group of homeschool kids I 100% agree with these opinions. Especially about not being busy all the time. It's amazing what a childs mind can create when they are bored!

We sign our kids up for soccer through our rec center. It's so cute watching 4 and 5 year olds running after the ball and trying to score. We signed them up again for fall. They like it so much.

I was a competitive swimmer and now my 10 and 8 year olds competitively swim and they love it. No injuries and super good exercise. Not all sports ruin your body but I get what you’re saying. I also enjoy watching them compete

Oh, yes! We live in a small town 3 hrs away from all the other teams. If you do sports here you really spend your life driving all over creation. Not worth it!

I love your unpopular opinions. I agree with them. My kids are allowed 1 activity each in addition to church activities. That activity can't be competitive or meet more than once a week. We make exceptions during soccer season which are 2 games a week for 6 weeks.

I agree, we have put my girls on the ymca teams but I have co workers who’s kids have played club for years and has cost thousands of dollars a year. It’s crazy.

I 100% agree with this. When I was younger, we played just our school offered sports. We played other teams at the same school or did the occasional scrimmage at a neighboring school. Then in high school, we did actual "competition". Sports are taken way too serious for kids at too young of an age. I always feel bad for the kids because there's so much unnecessary pressure. My family did sports purely for fun! I coached for 2 years and stepped away because the parents were too much to deal with.

Wow wish they had that option where I live, everything we homeschool I have to pay for.

I had an experience where a lady in my ward (congregation) called me on the phone and was surprised that my children could read! I did not know where to say “Thank you” or “Duh”😂. I feel like others in my area see homeschooling as a “free babysitting service” and they are surprised when a child actually is being taught. People can be very silly sometimes.

I also love my alone time!! And I was not crying at drop off either. But here we are, homeschooling and actually I really love it! I felt called to do it, and was committed. But I didn't realize how much fun I would have! :D

Just had to share, I also don't like kids very much. I have 3 of my own and love them to pieces. But other kids are a struggle for me. Glad I'm not alone in that feeling!

Great points made all around! I especially love the socialization aspect. Children learning from other children (in schools) rarely learn proper communication skills. I also agree with the notion that homeschooling is a family effort. My husband I collaborate a lot to get it all done. The mauve color looks beautiful on you😊

For history, I have used Bookshark. I also am with MTH and they pay for Bookshark. It’s a nice program for history because it’s four days a week and uses lots of books. You can buy one level and use it for the whole family or multiple- it depends on your family needs. Thank you for the science ideas. I am goi g to be looking into using TGATB science.

My 14 yo also loves learning Japanese and does the Outschool once a week. I also bought the Learn Japanese from Zero workbook for him to learn along with the free UA-cam lessons. He hasn't started the youtube lessons yet so I can't give any type of review on it.

Hey! Ty for the info. Quick question: can I put Spanish lessons, tumble class, art class charges all in the elective category or since they're not the same subject, that won't work??

My husband has been teaching my kids (5 girls) basic home repairs. How to replace a faucet, fill holes in the walls, and basic tools. They also know how to remove and replace flooring and helped with bathroom renovations where everything was replaced. He has taught about power tools also. I teach my kids at about 8-10 years old how to embroider or hand sew so they can fix basic holes in clothes and items to make it last longer. Some of my kids will go on to learn the sewing machine, teach themselves how to crochet or knit, and even how to make many different handcrafts. Since we modify most recipes due to food allergies, cooking from scratch, meal planning, and how to look at a recipe and see how to substitute to be able to eat it is another thing we teach when we do cooking.

4 years ago I taught my older kids about politics. We learned how the election process worked. We talked about all the hot topics of that election and both sides of the issue. We learned about the different people running that year. I found a website that you could answer your take on the topics and it would tell you where you land ;democrat, Republican, libertarian, etc. I also showed them the mail in ballot we got and showed them how that worked. We then stayed up election night following the news. We also played a board game called election night. It was one of my most favorite "class" I ever taught.

I also teach sewing and bread baking. During COVID my area got hit and the grocery stores had no bread. We had the ingredients in our pantry to have homemade bread. I would also add fitness, especially for middle school and high school. If kids don’t play sports, it’s still good to get them in the habit of daily exercise.

I only have 3 kiddos. My middle is very much ADD and learning his learning style and how to motivate him has been tough. I appreciate your honesty in just acknowledging that there are aspects of homeschool and of different seasons that are challenging. My oldest is autistic, so i get what you're struggling with. My biggest challenge this year was having a toddler. She's about the same age as your son. Keeping distracted and quiet is a big challenge. I had so many wins this year, but i think my biggest is learning about morning menus and implementing them. It has helped me get the constant review of material my kids need and it helped me be consistent in our scripture study/devotionals.
